Laura Cox, a former student of Egerton Park Arts College in Denton, Manchester, joined Tameside College in 2012 to study towards the Sage Accounts and the Sage Payroll programmes. After achieving an amazing A* in both courses, Laura decided to progress her studies and joined the newly formed WBIS course. WBIS offers learners the unique opportunity to use their professional experiences to build their degree in manageable stages. The programme, which can be tailored to meet individuals’ own needs, is the UK’s first integrative study programme provided by a College.
Laura is currently a full-time student of Tameside College studying for a BA Honours Degree in Business offered jointly from the College and University of Chester. The new programme started in September 2013 and Laura has been one of this year’s top-performing students. At the same time, she works as Administrative Manager in her family’s business Millbank Tool Co Ltd in Ashton-under-Lyne.
Laura said: “My time studying the WBIS degree so far has been fantastic, the course fits very easily into my working week and I have ample help from my tutor Tracey. The class meets up as a group every two weeks on a Saturday and this gives you a chance to discuss ideas with other students. As the course takes place on Saturdays, I lose no working hours and am still able to study, plus I get one to one meetings with my tutor Tracey when I need them.”
Laura continued: “I chose this course due to me working for a family business as an Administrative Manager; I felt I had the insight to study business further using my knowledge of what I already have from working in a management position. The business has been running for thirty four years dealing in precision engineering.”
Tracey Minogue, Laura’s tutor, said: “Laura was the first student to enrol on a WBIS programme at the College and is now our Student Representative for WBIS courses. She is passionate about learning and professional development and has been an inspiration to us all with her achievements, both personal and professional. Her aim is to develop her own local business in the future and with her motivation and positive approach we know she will be successful in achieving this!”
