Tameside College hosts ‘Burns Night’

A special celebration took place in the Food Department last night as students hosted their annual ‘Burns Night’ to help raise money and awareness for Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) The Soldiers’ Charity.

Although originally celebrated in Scotland to commemorate the life and works of the great Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns, ‘Burns Nights’ are now organised by people all over the world as a second Scottish National Day to celebrate everything Scottish.

The Food Department used the occasion to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, which gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families including debt relief, mobility assistance, education bursaries, care home fees and respite breaks.

Martin Coughlan, Department Head of Food & Business Professionals said: “We hold a ‘Burns Night’ every year to raise money for the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, it’s a fantastic cause and the students have the opportunity to try their hands at making traditional Scottish dishes.

Guests enjoyed their favourite Scottish delicacies which included: cock-a-leekie soup, roast sirloin beef with haggis and potatoes and Whisky flummery as well as a terrific bagpipe performance whilst mains were being served.

Chairman of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity for the Greater Manchester area, Colonel David Kirkwood said: “We really appreciate Tameside College hosting ‘Burns Night’ for the charity, not just because of the money we raise but for everyone who supports the charity who can take part in a wonderful evening with good food and great company. Last year ABF The Soldiers’ charity raised £200,000 in the North West region alone so help from organisations like Tameside College goes a long way for veterans and their families.”
