ATC official opening boosts technical skills

Brian Holliday, managing director Siemens plc, officially opened the Advanced Technologies Centre at Tameside College on Friday 19th May.

He was joined by employers, councillors, council officers and local secondary school children in taking part in activities in the £10 million facility at the Beaufort Road campus.  Delegates also had the opportunity to meet Andrew Beel, World Skills UK ambassador and were fascinated by a cake modelled on the new building that had been constructed by bakery students. There was also a surprise visit by Tom Cassell, a YouTube gaming star, who dropped in to share his experience as an online superstar.

Brian Holliday said: ‘The facilities in the Advanced Technologies Centre will help future engineers and scientists develop the skills to compete in a global market. Innovations, including robotics and sensor technologies, are essential in driving a 4th Industrial Revolution.  The development of engineering and manufacturing sectors require high level technical skills to adapt new technologies.  The Advanced Technologies Centre will help Manchester maintain its position as a leader in the UK engineering sector.’

Jackie Moores, Principal, Tameside College, said: ‘The Advanced Technologies Centre has already inspired school and college students.  Tameside Hack, hosted in the centre, showed off a range of outstanding talents as teams used technology to develop websites to help other young people and a virtual stock picking system.  The Advanced Technologies Centre will continue to inspire our local community and raise the stature of the borough of Tameside.’

The Advanced Technologies Centre is part of the Vision Tameside project which follows the opening of Clarendon Sixth Form College in autumn 2015.  The £10 million investment includes equipment in: robotics, 3D modelling, gaming design, science laboratories, manufacturing design, and CNC machining.  Tameside College is a leading provider of training in engineering and the design and investment is in response to employers’ needs for higher level technical skill in the sector.
