LGBT Awareness Month
Wed, 11 February 2009
Outloud, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) support group visited Tameside College to inform students about the organisation and to offer advice and support for young people, aged 14-19.
Representatives from Tameside Youth Services attended the college and held a stall in the refectory with promotional leaflets and booklets offering guidance to students. The visit to the college provided an opportunity to highlight problems like discrimination and homophobia; advising students on how to prevent and report such crimes.
Tameside Youth Services representative Lisa Matthews said, "Working at local colleges and schools means that we can talk to LGBT students who may need support or advice. Outloud offers a safe, confidential environment for young people to talk to professionals. Not only that, but we also aim at combating homophobia and highlight the importance of acceptance within the community."
A display has been set up in the Library, where students can get information throughout February. The Outloud team meet every Tuesday evening at 6:00pm – 8:30pm. For more information on the scheme please contact Lisa Matthews on 07967440952.
