Gabrielle Baxter, a bakery student from Tameside College, has been successfully selected for the prestigious ‘Hovis Scholarship Award’, which provides students with first hand bakery experience, working with industry professionals.
Rank Hovis created the scholarship to give student one student a year an all expenses paid learning experience, aimed at improving student’s bakery knowledge and providing expertise in a range of disciplines. The selection process for the award involved Gabrielle sitting through an interview, where she discussed with the industry experts her achievements at the college and her career aspirations.
Christopher Foxall, a representative from Premier Foods, will assist Gabrielle during the scholarship, which will see her travel around the UK visiting bakery institutions including flour mills, testing centres and local independent bakeries, as well as larger chain bakeries.
Gabrielle will start out at Southampton Mill, which specialise in flouring testing and milling. She will then travel to Birmingham to visit a number of top bakeries around the city. The trip will conclude in Lichfield, where a visit to Holgran will see Gabrielle learn about healthy food production.
A number of other events will take place throughout the year, which will certainly assist Gabrielle through college and into employment. Bakery Tutor, Lorna Jones said, “Gabrielle is the first student from the college to win the scholarship award and the entire Bakery department are very proud of her achievements. She has won many competitions since starting at the college and I’m sure she’ll continue to excel.”
