Prospective MP supports Apprenticeships

Tameside College welcomed some very special guests as part of the celebrations for National Apprenticeship Week to discuss how to boost construction apprenticeships and improve funding.

After inviting a representative from each political party to attend the special celebration, prospective MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, Angela Rayner came to join the discussions as well as Cross-Industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force Chair Members, Geoff Lister CBE and Martyn Price MBE. Several local SME Directors and business owners from the construction industry also attended to share their experience of employing apprentices.

Angela Rayner, a self-described ‘champion of apprenticeships’ said: “Having come from a vocational background, I truly believe in the value of apprenticeships. They provide great opportunities for our young people and the discussions taking place today just shows how important they are to businesses and the wider community.”

Business Development Advisor, Alison Lambourne, who organised the event said: “We’d like to thank all our key note speakers, Angela, Geoff and Martyn who have come to support and contribute to our discussion on improving apprenticeships and supporting businesses who will be employing our apprentices of the future. We’d also like to thank the representatives of businesses that we work with and who employ our apprentices for coming down today to be part of the discussion. 65% of apprentices are employed by SME’s, so to have SME and local business owners take the time out of their day to be part of the discussion for improvements is fantastic. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to mark National Apprenticeship Week.”
