Students immerse themselves in Belgian culture

Twenty-three lucky Tameside College Travel students had the chance to have a cultural experience in the medieval city of Bruges in North West Belgium recently as part of their Level 3 Travel & Tourism course.

Excited Travel students hopped on the overnight ferry from Hull to Bruges to see what the city had to offer them for the day. Student Chanel Walker said of the experience: “We were so excited to go to Bruges, no one in the class had been before and everyone had a great time on the overnight ferry, it was a whole new experience. It’s important for us to have knowledge of different places for when we go into the travel industry so it’s been a real joy immersing ourselves in Belgian culture.”

The students had the opportunity to go on one of Bruges’s famous chocolate workshops, as well as sample local food and take in the picturesque views from a boat trip on the canals that surround the city.

Travel & Tourism Lecturer Ruth David said: “These trips are really important for our Travel students because when they finish their course and go into the Travel industry, they will be expected to know about worldwide destinations. Having first-hand knowledge from their own travels and experiencing other cultures means that students will be able to give customers a personal view of the places they’ve been and advise them on what to do and see.”
