Construction student comes second in first round of competition

Over 100 of the best construction trainees in the North West attended the first round of the national construction competition, SkillBuild to battle it out in their chosen trade. Trainees from trades such as bricklaying, joinery, tiling and painting and decorating were all put through their paces as expert judges scored them on their skills and technique.

The annual competition organised and supported by the Construction Industry Training Board (the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry) has been looking for the country’s finest construction talent for the last 40 years and they weren’t disappointed.

This year Tameside College put forward three students in the Senior Carpentry, Joinery and Brick Layer categories to showcase their talents at the first stage of the competition. Level two Bench Joinery, student Alex Bromley was thrilled to come second in the Joinery category, he said of his experience: “I’m really excited to have come second, I absolutely love working in joinery and so pleased that my abilities are being recognised at a regional level. My Tutors have been amazingly supportive and really given me the confidence to go for it. Depending on how the other Colleges score in the Joinery category I may even get to represent Tameside at the national finals in November which would be a fantastic end to an already fantastic year at Tameside College.”

Faculty Director for Construction and Engineering Technologies at Tameside College, Simon Muschamp said: “We’re so pleased for Alex and what he has accomplished. He was up against stiff competition from several other regional Colleges. He is a great example of what students can accomplish with hard work and determination. He is a credit to the College and the great teaching that takes place here. His Tutor, Dean Donelon and the rest of the Joinery team have done a great job and I know that they are very proud of all the students that competed.”
