Staff member to undertake 1000 mile bike ride for charity

Learning Support Officer for the Joinery team, Alan Wilson is to take on one of the most challenging bike rides in the country by travelling from John O’Groats in Scotland and cycling to Land’s End in Cornwall.

Alan joined Stockport Community Cycling Club in 2011 after a bout of illness meant he was off work for three months. He said: “As I was starting to feel better I decided that I wanted to become fitter so started cycling with Stockport Community Cycling Club every Sunday. At first I thought cycling 10 miles was a lot but now I’m cycling between 40 and 80 miles every week as well as cycling to work every day.”

After cycling with the club for three years, Alan took part in the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride, starting from Manchester United Football Ground at Old Trafford and finishing on the South Promenade at Blackpool. “It was a challenge but great fun doing it with the rest of the team from Tameside College.”

After completing the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride, Alan set his sights on the End-to-End bike ride, a grueling 1000 mile bike ride that would take him around two weeks to complete, all self-funded. “After 12 months of planning the ride I can’t believe it’s finally happening! It’s going to be the adventure of a lifetime so although I’m nervous about the challenge ahead I’m more excited.” He said.

Alan will be raising money for Multiple Sclerosis Society and Leukaemia Care. For more information on the End-to-End bike ride or to donate please visit Alan’s JustGiving page.
