Tameside tutors mentor pupils into North West challenge

Tameside College Motor Vehicle staff gave up some of their free time recently to mentor pupils from Abraham Moss Community School in the run up to competing in the Greenpower Challenge.

Tutors, Graham Thomas, Paul Wilkinson and Peter Knapper were mentors for the pupils and helped them build and race a vehicle that would cover long distances. The Greenpower Challenge is a National event involving schools from across the country, the challenge allows students to build on their team skills and learn about the Motor Vehicle trade. Some parts of the vehicle had to be the same for each group/school participating but ultimately the design, modifications and dynamics of the vehicle were down to the preference of the team and what they felt would get them in the running for a bigger challenge.

Abraham Moss Community School students competed in the race, with Tameside College tutors by their side for support and were able to secure their place in the North West Challenge which will be held at Aintree in September.

Motor Vehicle tutor Graham, who was involved in mentoring commented; “We really enjoyed working with the school and passing on skills, techniques and experiences onto the students. We are really enthusiastic about projects like this and will continue to mentor others in challenges like the Greenpower Challenge.”
