Students give 'thumbs-up' to Advanced Technologies Centre

Two Tameside College students were given the honour of ‘topping-out’ the new Advanced Technologies Centre at Stamford Street on Thursday, 3rd September. In only 22 weeks the steel construction already dominates the skyline at the Beaufort Road Campus and the completion of the exterior marks yet another milestone in the VisionTameside project, which is set to transform education in the borough.

The ceremony was carried out by current College students Khalil Shakeel and Anthony Welsby who are both studying Computing (ICT) and will be moving into the new College building in April 2016. Khalil and Anthony laid the final amount of concrete on the top floor of the Advanced Technologies Centre which will support the growth of advanced engineering and technology in the Tameside area.

Also present at the ceremony were Cllrs Jim Fitzpatrick and Ged Cooney who represented Tameside Council; Peter Ryder, Principal of Tameside College and Governors of Tameside College, Joan Ryan and John Lyne. Representatives from Kier Group, contractors for the VisionTameside project were present including: Regional Director Phil Chadwick, Operations Manager Stuart Brown, Site Manager Ashley Davies, Site Engineer Geoff Danby and Business Development Manager Sue Patterson.

Cllr Fitzpatrick said: “The Advanced Technologies Centre will provide an excellent opportunity for the young people of Tameside to develop their advanced engineering skills and take advantage of technology growth in the Tameside area. The VisionTameside project, demonstrates Tameside Council’s commitment to education, and to making the very best facilities available to our young people.

College Principal, Peter Ryder said: “This is an exciting time for Tameside College and for the young people of the borough. We want to provide the very best of learning environments for all young people and the addition of the Advanced Technologies Centre underpins our commitment to the growth in advanced engineering and emerging technologies. We want to ensure that the skills we provide meet those demanded by employers.”

The new Advanced Technologies Centre is only part of the first phase of VisionTameside; Clarendon Sixth Form College due to open next month. The new development will bring together A-Level provision, creative industries and performing arts under one state-of-the-art facility for the young people of Tameside.

Phase two will see the construction of a building the council will share with partners and retail facilities. The Advanced Skills Centre will open in 2018.
