Students selected for World Skills UK squad

Two Tameside College students have been selected for the World Skills UK squad that will compete in Abu Dhabi in 2017. Jordan Philburn and Zac Wolfe impressed judges with their restaurant service skills at the World Skills UK final to be selected for the squad.
Jordan and Zac will take part in a training and development programme which will include the selection of Team UK ahead of World Skills Abu Dhabi 2017. The development programme will include a series of milestones and benchmarks which Squad UK competitors must achieve to progress.
World Skills is the largest international skills competition in the world. Held every two years, the competition sees around 1000 young people, aged 18-25, from all over the world come together to compete for medals in more than 40 different skills including Electrical Installation, Welding, Web Design, Cooking and Bricklaying. World Skills Abu Dhabi takes place from 14 to 19 October 2017.
Both students have also taken their first steps in their careers after completing hospitality and catering courses at Tameside College. Jordan, who won bronze medal at the final, will start a front of house role at Mr Coopers at the Midland Hotel this week whilst Zac has been employed at The French, Midland Hotel, for eighteen months.
Jordan Philburn, bronze winner, said: ’It was a tough competition but very enjoyable. We competed against people from across the country and were tested in a range of restaurant service skills. We are delighted to have been selected for the World Skills UK squad. With the training and support we can only improve’.
John Holden, hospitality teacher and mentor, said: ‘Zac and Jordan continue to surpass my expectations. They show a passion and determination to succeed. They fully deserve to be in the World Skills UK squad. Their experience in the World Skills UK final will give them confidence to progress further’.
