Horticulture students gain work experience with Tameside’s Greenspace

Twenty horticulture students from Tameside College have been working with Tameside Council’s Greenspace team to gain work experience in the borough’s parks for one day each week.

Students have been helping the team to strip out bedding, plant bulbs, clear leaves and edge flower beds. The students are also supporting the maintenance of natural areas by helping to cut and rake them to ensure the display of wildflowers are vibrant all year round.

Cllr Peter Robinson, Tameside Council’s executive member with responsibility for parks, said: “This work is another example of the way our partnership with Tameside College is yielding positive results. The students are developing traditional skills which will help them to improve their chances of finding a job.”

Jane Massam, Horticulture Lecturer at Tameside College, said: “The horticulture courses that we provide at Tameside College are unique in that they combine classroom theory lessons with working alongside highly-trained gardeners. Our partnership with Tameside Council is beneficial to both organisations, but most of all for our students. The skills that they acquire doing work experience like this are so important for when they finish college and start looking for employment.”
