Top university introduces Access Programme at Tameside College

Tameside College had a visit from the University of Manchester last week to introduce their Manchester Access Programme. The programme targets and supports talented students who are from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in higher education. Students who successfully gain a place on the programme benefit from a series of support activities including: skills workshops, mentoring and one-to-one UCAS application guidance from university staff.

At the end of the programme students are asked to complete an academic assignment under the guidance of an academic tutor at the university which helps develop their skills for university. Students who successfully complete the Manchester Access Programme will benefit from 40 UCAS points towards their University of Manchester offer.

Catalina Cimpoera, a representative of the University of Manchester’s Access Programme said: “Through the scheme we want to show young people the benefits of higher education and with our scheme, the Manchester Access Programme, we aim to help those from all educational and social backgrounds to achieve their dream of going to university.”

Corinne Rainey, Student Services Team Leader at Tameside College said: “We’re really grateful to the University of Manchester for coming in to talk to the students, many of which would never dreamed of going to university but with schemes like this in place, they know it is an option for them if they aim high and work hard at college. All young people should have the opportunity to go to university if they want to despite educational and social barriers.”
