Former joinery apprentice turns his talents to teaching

George Wood, a former level 3 joinery student from Tameside College, is helping to teach the next generation of joiners after completing an apprenticeship with local Ashton firm, DJ Joiners and Builders.

George, a former Glossop Dale Community College student, said: “Joinery and carpentry has always been a passion of mine since I was young, working with my Dad on woodwork projects for his company, I’ve always enjoyed it. It wasn’t until I was coming to the end of my apprenticeship that I decided to come back to college and study to become a teacher. Then I got asked by the joinery team if I would like to help teach the level 1 group whilst I work towards my certificate in education and I love it.”

George has made a great deal of progress with the students since he started helping out last September and thinks his impact is down to his own experience at Tameside College. He said: “I think the students relate to me because I came to Tameside College myself and show them what they can achieve if they work hard.”

Dean Donelon, carpentry and joinery teacher and assessor at Tameside College, said: “George originally studied A-levels however his heart was always in carpentry and joinery having been brought up around his father’s carpentry business. After coming to Tameside College to pursue his passions he excelled in every aspect of his level 3 and demonstrated an excellent attitude. We are delighted George has decided to progress into a career in teaching and come to help out teaching in the department.”

George hopes to work for Tameside College once he has finished his certificate in education and continue to inspire students to follow their career dreams as he has done.
