Apprentice comes out top in Skillbuild contest

Tameside College brickwork apprentice, Jake Horoszczak, claimed first place in the regional finals of Skillbuild.  He was joined on the podium with fellow Tameside College students, Edward Brown and Alex Bromley.

Construction students from colleges and training providers across the country competed against each other in the Skillbuild competition which was held at Stockport College last week.

Jake, from Ashton, is currently a level 3 apprentice in trowel occupations and employed by Seddon Construction, was judged to be the best in the bricklaying category.

Edward Brown, a former West Hill School pupil, claimed second place in carpentry whilst Alex Bromley, joinery student from Tameside College, came second in the joinery section.

Carl Shaw, Curriculum Leader for construction at Tameside College, said: “This is a huge success for our students> They represented the college extremely well and we are proud of the hard work they put in to the competition, they deserve the success. We will continue to compete in events like the Skillbuild and look forward to our continued success.”

Students who scored highly in the Skillbuild heats will go on to compete in the national finals in November 2016.
