Bakery student is star of the show

A Tameside College bakery student has beaten off competition from master and amateur bakers from across the UK to win a prestigious award.

Abigail Potts, a former William Hulme Grammar student, was presented with the Horton trophy by the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees at Alton Towers Hotel on Saturday.  She produced an 800g competition quality white loaf that impressed the judges, to claim the national award.

Tameside College also won a number of second and third place prizes in different sections that tested students’ bakery and confectionary skills such as the Callebaut Chocolate Trophy.

Abigail, commented: “I am really pleased to have won this prize. All the hard work, preparing and practicing for the competition has paid off for me and I couldn’t be happier. My tutors have really helped me get to this point and I hope to go onto a successful career in the food industry.”

Stephen Lee, bakery teacher at Tameside College, commented: “We are enormously proud of the students’ achievements; Abigail in particular is a credit to the college and the industry itself. It’s taken a lot of work but every year our students impress us more and more.”
