Schools get an insight into food industry

Year 10 and 11 students from schools across Tameside visited Tameside College for a food industry day to discover career opportunities in the sector and to find out more about the college’s food courses.

The pupils visited Reflections, the college’s training restaurant to create mocktails and flambé pancakes with food service teacher, John who also talked about the opportunities available for them in the industry.

The visitors also had the opportunity to visit the college’s specialist kitchens and bakeries to create a range of snacks including spicy chicken skewers, pizza, bread knots and cupcakes which they enjoyed at the end of the day.

Jaqueline Francis, head of technology at Longdendale High School said: “It was such a fantastic experience for our students. All the staff and students at the college were professional, friendly and welcoming and the students were in such a good mood when they left. We hope to bring our food and nutrition students to the college for a day in the kitchens and restaurant so that they can enjoy the experience too.”

Rhiannon Venables, business development leader at Tameside College said: ““Events like the food industry day are a fantastic opportunity for Year 10 and 11 students, as it gives them an insight into what we do here at the college. The students had a great day and we can’t wait to hopefully see some of the students back with us again in a couple of years on one of our food courses.”

The schools involved included: Audenshaw High School, William Hulme Grammar School, Longdendale High School, Astley Sports College, Hyde Community College and Hathershaw High School.

The college offers a wide range of catering, hospitality and bakery courses for school leavers. For more information contact the college on 0161 908 6600 or fill out an enquiry form on our website http://www.tameside.ac.uk/
