Students get top experience with football association

Tameside College hosted the Tameside primary schools girls Futsal tournament to help students from the college gain experience in running, managing and refereeing sporting events.

The competition, which included seven primary schools from around the borough took place in the college’s specialist sports academy and was managed by ten ‘young leaders’ from Tameside College on courses ranging from entry level right through to level three sports.

Futsal is similar in many ways to Football, however it is played by teams of five and usually in an indoor space on a smaller pitch made of rubber or other synthetic material.

Each five minute match was managed by a different young leader who refereed, scored and gave guidance to the students. The whole event was organised through the English Colleges Football Association which represents Football in colleges and also the Tameside Schools Sports Partnership which brings together local schools for activities in the area.

Primary schools that took part in the event included: Greenside, Fairfield Rd, Holden Clough, St John Fisher, Canon Burrows, Ravensfield and Broadoak.

Luke Podmore, Sports Development Officer at Tameside College, said: “This event was a great opportunity for our students and the college. Not only did our students learn about what it takes to run an event but the college also brought together so many different organisations and schools to create a great day. I am very proud of our students for their professionalism and hard work.”

Jessica White, a level three sports student and ‘young leader’, said: “I really enjoyed the event and it was a bit different to my usual day so it made it quite interesting. I think the experience will help me in the future because I had to go out of my comfort zone and make decisions in real time as well as organise a complicated event. It was also quite fun to have a front row seat for the games”.
