Primary school pupils have a blast at Tameside College

Year six pupils from Canon Johnson Primary School were delighted to be invited by Tameside College to tour around their facilities and give them inspiration about careers they may enjoy in the future.

Pupils began their tour in the college’s painting and decorating department, where they learned how college students designed their custom patterns and used different colour palettes to achieve personalised results. They then made their way through Tameside College’s brand new Advanced Technologies Centre to learn about how engineering is an integral part of our everyday lives and see some of the latest technologies in action. They also enjoyed a look around the college’s joinery workshop, electrical department, hair salon, sports academy and the cabin crew training plane.

Pupils finished their tour with a look around the college’s food department learning about careers in food production and hospitality in the onsite kitchens, Reflections restaurant and bakery. Students even came away with a treat made by bakery students, much to their delight.

Year six pupil, Alicia Whiteside, said: “The tour was really fun and educational. I learned that if you do well in school you can be whoever you want to be. I enjoyed the food area and being on the aeroplane in travel the best. I didn’t know how many different jobs you could do in travel so I learned a lot.”

Kirsty Pollard, year six teacher at Canon Johnson Primary School, said: “It was a great tour and the students really enjoyed it. It’s better to start planting the seed about potential careers early on so they can make informed decisions by the time they get to college. I know that the students are a lot more at ease now about coming to college after meeting some of the lovely teachers today. Thank you to Tameside College for inviting us in, the students had a great time and the staff were fantastic.”
