Cricket club counts on college

Students from Tameside College’s construction department have constructed a brand new scout hut for Stayley Milbrook Cricket Club.

After receiving a grant from the English Cricket Board, the club asked the college to help with the project ready for the new season.

General construction operations students built the concrete base and set out the structure. Once this was completed, bricklaying students laid down the outer walls using breezeblocks and joinery students fitted a gable roof over the structure, the windows and the staircase. Painting and decorating students also had a role to play, painting the inside and outside of the hut.

Dave Sexton, trainer and assessor in brickwork at Tameside College, said: “To see the students using so many skills that they have learnt on their course is fantastic. They have built the hut from start to finish just like in a real industry environment so it’s a great achievement for them. Thanks to the club for giving them the opportunity.”

Thomas Brown, level 2 general construction operations student, said: “The score hut has been a fun project to work on. To go out into the real world of construction and build something from scratch makes me proud. Hopefully it will serve the club well for the future!”
