Bakery students win national awards

A Tameside College bakery student has beaten off competition from master and amateur bakers from across the UK to win a prestigious award.

Emma Dransfield, a former Waterhead Academy student, was awarded 1st place in the masters cup by the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees (ABST) at Alton Towers Hotel on Saturday. Emma impressed the judging panel with a coburg cob, plaited loaf and a wholemeal loaf to claim the national award.

Tameside College also won a number of second and third place prizes in different sections that tested students’ bakery and confectionary skills such as the Callebaut Chocolate Trophy

Emma, commented: “I am so proud to have won the award, and the staff at the college have helped me get there. I have really loved my time at Tameside College and it has opened up a lot of doors into industry for me, especially after putting my skills to the test in these competitions.”

After completing her level three course, Emma will study a technical certificate in patisserie and confectionary at Tameside College to prepare a career as specialist baker..

Lorna Jones, curriculum leader for food studies at Tameside College, commented: “I am really proud of what our students have accomplished at the ABST conference this week.  They were put up against industry specialists and I am absolutely delighted with what they have achieved. it’s onwards and upwards for our level 3 students. We wish them all the very the best.”
