Students lend a hand for Big Community Clean Up

Public services students at Tameside College have been helping clean up the local area as part of their work experience programme.

The students were given the task of helping to clean the area around Stamford Park boating lake and Chadwick Dam as part of an ongoing regeneration project, ‘The Big Community Clean Up’. They were tasked with removing any rubbish, litter and overgrown weeds to make it a safer and friendlier place to visit.

Ridgehill Enterprises, a community funded company and Tameside Council asked the students to get involved with the project after teachers Beth and Andrew offered the student’s assistance.

The boating lake and Chadwick Dam are currently undergoing a massive restoration and regeneration project, which will see the sailing and fishing area returned to its former glory.

Beth McCarthy, public services teacher at Tameside College, said: “It’s great for our students to be involved in projects and experiences like this, out in the community. If they do go into working in the public sector, they could well be helping out in the community so it’s great to have that experience and also to show them the value of teamwork.”

Sam Rogers, level three public services student, said: “I’m enjoying the project because it’s helping local people enjoy the outdoors more and it also gives me more experience with projects like this. I’m excited to see what the lake will be like when the regeneration is completed.”
