Construction department excels at Skillbuild 2018

Construction students from Tameside College have returned victorious after taking three of the top spots in the skillbuild 2018 north-west regional qualifiers.

Shane Brown, Megan Ribbon and Declan Gardner came 2nd in carpentry and joinery, 2nd in painting and decorating and 3rd in bricklaying respectively.

The competition, which took place at The City of Liverpool College last week, brings together students from colleges across the region to compete against one another in: carpentry and joinery, brickwork, furniture and cabinet making, painting and decorating, bricklaying and plastering.

If successful in the regional qualifiers, students may be selected to represent their region in the Skillbuild UK final and could become part of the Worldskills national team, which competes internationally.

Carl Shaw, curriculum leader for construction at Tameside College, said: “We have done really well this year in the Skillbuild competitions. It shows that the college produces some excellent students and that across the board in each subject, they continue to excel and grow. Well done to them for representing the college so brilliantly.”

Students that took part in the competition from Tameside College included:

Shane Brown – advanced joinery

Megan Ribbon – advanced painting and decorating

Samantha Elliott – advanced painting and decorating

Zak Gregory – advanced painting and decorating

Declan Gardner – advanced bricklaying

Jake Fallows – new entrant bricklaying
