Food students are ‘front runners’ at Chester Races

Hospitality and catering students at Tameside College delivered a five-star service to guests at the annual Chester racecourse, Boodles May festival recently.

For three days the students worked within the tented village at the racecourse assisting Horseradish catering company. Hospitality students supervised seven catering chalets, serving food and ensuring service ran smoothly, whilst cookery students prepared 2,000 meals to be served to guests.

Teisha Baker, hospitality supervision student at Tameside College who took part in the service, said: “Working at Chester races has been one of the best experiences I have had whilst at college. We all worked well and fitted in with the other staff who were working there. Supervising the chalet gave me the chance to show my full range of skills and was really exciting.”

With students from the college taking part in the event for over ten years, it has become an integral part of the course, giving them vital work experience and the opportunity to practise techniques learnt in the classroom.

Boodles May festival is one of the largest horseracing events in the UK, attracting nearly 60,000 people each year.

Delyth Jones, staffing and recruitment manager at Chester racecourse, said: “The students have done an amazing job in providing our guests with exceptional service standards, contributing to enhancing the customers experience. We have worked with Tameside College for a long time and their students have become an integral part of our catering team during the event. We hope that we can continue to work with Tameside College and also to create employment opportunities.”
