Level 1 Diploma in Public Services BTEC

Your Unique Experience

You will taught by a number of Tutors with real life Public Service experience and a Progress Tutor who will specifically look after your pastoral and study programme needs.

Assessment involves a range of methods including group discussions, posters, report writing, presentations, photographic & video evidence and a range of practical and outdoor assessments. There is currently no formal exam with this course.

The course includes a comprehensive work experience programme with involvement from many of our Public Service organisations including the British Army, Royal Marines, Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and a range of guest speakers including former students now serving within our Public Services.

Students may get the opportunity to take part in residential trips throughout the course so if you may want to consider spending some time away with the Royal Marines, the British Army or the Royal Navy to see what life is really like on a military base then this could be the course for you.

Course Content

The course is designed to help develop the skills and qualities you would need to work in the Public Services. You will experience a range of activities including classroom based learning, physical fitness training, outdoor and adventurous activities and a comprehensive work experience programme with a range of Public Service organisations

More than just a Course

You may be interested in a career with our Armed Forces or serving your local community as an Emergency Service worker but they all require dedicated individuals with a desire to serve and help people. This course will give you an insight into the range of jobs and roles available, what you need to join to join these organisations and how to prepare yourself for entry to our Public Services. Working within the Public Services can be both demanding and challenging so this course can help you to prepare for entry and offer you a chance to experience working within these organisations.

Course Format

This is a full time programme where you will be expected to complete 12 units of work throughout the year. Your work is assessed by your tutors and you must pass every unit to gain the diploma at the end of the course. In addition to this you may be required to further improve your current Maths and English grades to enhance your employability prospects and you will undertake a tutorial with your progress tutor each week, where you will get the opportunity to develop other elements such as CV writing, time management and advice on part time job opportunities.

Special Features

We participate in the Greater Manchester College Group Public Services Competition each year and were the 2016 champions with a number of students from the level 1 course in the winning team.

Students get the opportunity to participate in local events as stewards, gaining invaluable experience to develop their skills and qualities.

Entry Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required but a range of GCSE grades E to F would be beneficial. This course is suitable if you are considering a career in Uniformed Public Services - the Armed Forces, the Police, the Prison Service, HM Revenue and Customs, the Ambulance and Paramedic Services or the Fire and Rescue Service.

Progression

On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:

NCFE Level 2 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services (1 year)
