Assessment involves a range of methods including group discussions, posters, report writing, presentations, photographic & video evidence and a range of practical and outdoor assessments. There is no formal exam but students are encouraged to aim for higher level grades within the pass/merit/distinction grading system.
The course includes a comprehensive work experience programme with involvement from many of our Uniformed Service organisations including the British Army, Royal Marines, Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and a range of guest speakers including former students now serving within our Uniformed Services.
Students may get the opportunity to take part in residential trips throughout the course so if you may want to consider spending some time away with the Royal Marines, the British Army or the Royal Navy to see what life is really like on a military base then this could be the course for you.
The course is designed to help develop the skills and qualities you would need to work in the Public Services or to go forward into Higher Education. You will experience a range of activities including classroom based learning, physical fitness training, outdoor and adventurous activities and a comprehensive work experience programme with a wide range of our Public Service organisations.
Throughout the course you will study a range of topics including:
Government, Policies and the Public Services
Instructing Physical Activity / Physical Preparation
Crime and its Effects on Society
Planning & Management of Major Incidents
Skills for Land-based / Water-based Activities
More than just a Course
Working within our Public Services can be demanding but also rewarding and you may be interested in a career with our Armed Forces or serving your local community as an Emergency Service worker but they all require dedicated individuals with a desire to serve and help people. This course will give you an insight into the range of jobs and roles available, what you may need to join these organisations and how to prepare yourself for entry into our Public Services. Working within the Public Services requires you to demonstrate a level of professionalism and diligence so this course can help you to prepare for entry and offer you a chance to experience “hands on” work within these organisations.
This is a full time programme where you will be expected to complete 9 units of work in year 1 and a further 9 in year 2.
