Practical Media Make-up lessons take place alongside theory lessons. There are end practical (synoptic) exams and written exams. Practical lessons also include working on live models. You will take part in trips, visits, seminars and competitions alongside your lessons to ensure you have a very good understanding of the industry in which you will work.
Learners are expected to take part in work experience, this will include travel and evenings and could include weekend working. It will include external local theatre productions and local fashion shows. You will also work in partnership with Performing Arts students at Clarendon Sixth Form College, providing hair and make-up services for the ‘season’ of productions. Gaining part time employment in the industry will greatly enhance your skills and aid employability and progression opportunities.
An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will be designed with you, to meet your needs. Targets will be set to enable your progress and achievement.
You will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will specifically look after your pastoral and progress requirements throughout the course
You will be trained in the use of specialist, professional products, equipment and treatments.
This course covers a wide range of advanced level skills and knowledge required for working as a Media Hair & Make-up Artist. It includes the following units:
Working in the film, TV and theatre industry
Fashion and photographic make-up
Media Make-up and creative hair design
Create historical hair and make-up looks
Apply Body Art & Camouflage Make -up
There are many additional opportunities as part of this advanced study programme. You will be expected to take part in work experience opportunities which often involve evening or weekend working. You will also have the opportunity to represent the college as you enter a range of regional and national competitions, such as Greater Manchester Colleges’ Competitions and regional and national competitions. During your time on this programme, you will also take part in external study visits, for example to Professional Beauty North, to observe professionals within the industry and taking part in bespoke one day demonstrations on the latest trends and fashions in the industry.
This course is assessed through a mixture of practical assessments, written tests and exams. You will also complete 36 hours of work experience in industry as part of your study programme.
More than just a Course
Media Make up offers an exciting and challenging career in a fast paced industry. This advanced level, specialist course will develop your core employability skills such as communication and retail alongside specialist practical Media Make-up and Hairdressing skills. It will give you the knowledge and practical skills to progress to a course at level 4 in Beauty Therapy, Media Hair Styling & Make-up to work in a supervisory capacity in industry. If you are interested in a career in Media Make-up and Hairdressing, Tameside College offers a wide range of courses to get you started in a rewarding career in these areas. This course will give you the knowledge and skills to progress within the sector and enable you to progress your career in this industry.
This is a full time programme, you will be assessed through a mixture of practical assessments, written tests and examinations; you must pass all the exams to gain the qualification. You will learn through a variety of methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles for example, case studies, assessments, group work, practical work, projects and interactive activities. You will also complete 36 hours of work experience in industry as part of your course.
You will be expected to provide equipment and a uniform. The uniform costs £35.99 and the equipment costs £124.51. Details of these will be provided at interview.
Alongside your Media Make-up studies you will study mathematics & English which are mandatory and a core part of your study programme, if you are aged 16-18 and do not have a Grade C or Grade 4 in mathematics and English.
Potential learners should a Level 2 qualification in make-up or hairdressing.
Learners should also possess the following qualities:

You will need to complete 6 hours per week home study.
