An Individual Learning Plan will be designed for your needs

Assigned a Personal Tutor and a Progress Tutor who specifically look after your pastoral and course requirements

The course also includes guest speakers and educational visits.

Assessments are in a variety of ways including discussion, displays, case studies, presentations, written work and practical assessments whilst at placement

Weekly work placement experience in a range of settings

An enhanced DBS is essential

Course Content

Throughout the course, you will develop a range of skills and knowledge preparing you for progression into employment within the Early Years sector or onto level 2 Introduction to Childcare and education.

Course units include;

Supporting babies to play

Understand learning and development

Growth and development of young children

Musical activities for young children

More than just a Course

If you are interested in a career working with children aged five and under in a variety of roles, Tameside College offers a range of courses to get you started in the rewarding career of the Early Years sector. The course combines work based training with college knowledge and you will attend a work placement setting for 1 day per week. This is an integral part of the course and you will complete a portfolio of evidence whilst you are on placement. The majority of the course is assessed through coursework.

Working with children can be a rewarding and challenging career; it requires enthusiasm and dedication, commitment and maturity. You should know you wish to work with children and develop new skills at both college and placement.

Learners can progress on to the Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Childcare and Education (EYE) into employment or an apprenticeship. Learners often gain employment at the end of the course within a setting they have had a placement with. The course will give you the knowledge and skills to move forward into employment or level 3.

Special Features

Alongside your core Childcare qualification you will study either GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and English (if not already achieved at L2)

So that you can attend your weekly placement you will undergo and acquire an enhanced DBS check

Entry Qualifications

Learners must have;

No formal GCSE’s

Successful interview with a Early Years tutor

A genuine interest in the subject

Good communication skills

A hardworking approach


On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:

Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator)

Employment within the Early Years sector
