Diploma in Media Make-up and Hair – Full Time, Level 2 (City and Guilds)

Your Unique Experience

Practical Media Make-up lessons take place alongside theory lessons. There are end practical (synoptic) exams and written exams. Practical lessons also include working on live models. You will take part in trips, visits, seminars and competitions alongside your lessons to ensure you have a very good understanding of the industry in which you will work.

Learners are expected to take part in work experience, this will include evenings and could include weekend working. It will include external local theatre productions and local fashion shows. You will also work in partnership with Performing Arts students at Clarendon Sixth Form College, providing hair and make-up services for the ‘season’ of productions. Gaining part time employment in the industry will greatly enhance your skills and aid employability and progression opportunities.

An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will be designed with you, to meet your needs. Targets will be set to enable your progress and achievement.

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor who specifically looks after your pastoral and progress requirements throughout the course

You will be trained in the use of specialist, professional products, equipment and treatments.

Course Content

This course covers all aspects of Media Make up with some Hairstyling and Postiche (wig making) work.

Media Hair and Make-up Units:

Working in the Hairdressing and Media Make-up Industry

Client care and communication

Apply Make up

Provide Lash and Brow Treatments

Create an image based on a theme

The Art of Photographic Make–up

Body Art Design

Apply skin tanning techniques

The art of colouring and dressing hair

Make and style a hair addition (postiche / wigmaking)

There are many additional opportunities as part of this study programme. You will be expected to take part in work experience opportunities which often involve evening or weekend working. You will also have the opportunity to represent the college as you enter a range of regional and national competitions, such as Greater Manchester Colleges’ Competitions. During your time on this programme, you will also take part in external study visits, for example to Professional Beauty North, to observe professionals within the industry and taking part in bespoke one day demonstrations on the latest trends and fashions in the industry.

More than just a Course

Media Make up offers an exciting and challenging career in a fast paced industry. This level 2 Diploma will develop your core employability skills such as communication and retail alongside specialist practical Media Make-up and Hairdressing skills. It will give you the knowledge and practical skills to progress to a course at level 3 in Beauty Therapy, Media Hair Styling & Make-Up to work in a supervisory capacity in industry.

Course Format

This is a full time programme, you will be assessed through a mixture of practical assessments, written tests and examinations; you must pass all the exams to gain the qualification. You will learn through a variety of methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles for example, case studies, assessments, group work, practical work, projects and interactive activities. You will also complete 36 hours of work experience in industry as part of your course

Special Features

You will be expected to provide equipment and a uniform. The uniform costs £35.99 and the equipment costs £124.51.

Alongside your Media Make-up studies you will study mathematics & English which are mandatory and a core part of your study programme, if you are aged 16-18 and do not have a Grade C or Grade 4 in mathematics and English.

Entry Qualifications

Potential learners should have a good general education and require 4 x GCSE grade D or above or level 1 in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing. Learners should also possess the following qualities:

Be reliable & punctual

You will need to complete 6 hours per week home study.


On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:

Level 3 Media Hair & Make-up

Employment with a cosmetics company or a high street salon

Freelance MMU artist
