Diploma in Hairdressing – Full Time, Level 3 (City and Guilds)

Your Unique Experience

Practical hairdressing lessons take place alongside commercial salon sessions and theory lessons. Practical lessons include working on live paying clients with some skill development workshops on training heads. You will take part in trips, visits, seminars and competitions alongside your lessons to ensure you have a very good understanding of the current trends in the industry.

Learners are expected to undertake work experience in a salon setting. Gaining part time employment in a salon will greatly enhance your skills and aid employability and progression opportunities.

An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will be designed with you, to meet your needs. Targets will be set to enable your progress and achievement.

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor who specifically looks after your pastoral and progress requirements throughout the course

Mathematics & English classes are mandatory and a core part of your study programme, if you are aged 16-18 and do not have a Grade C or Grade 4 in mathematics and English.

You will be trained in the use of specialist, professional products, equipment and treatments.

Course Content

The course covers a wide range of skills and knowledge required for working in the hairdressing industry.

These include:

Cutting hair using a combination of advanced techniques

Creatively colour and lighten hair

Hairdressing advanced consultation services

Creatively style and dress hair

Hair colour correction services

There are many additional opportunities as part of this study programme. You will be expected to take part in work experience, and also have the opportunity to represent the college as you enter a range of regional and national competitions, such as Greater Manchester Colleges’ Competitions. During your time on this programme, you will also take part in external study visits, for example to Wella Studios in Manchester, to observe professionals within the industry and taking part in bespoke one day demonstrations on the latest trends and fashions in the industry. This course is assessed through a mixture of practical assessments, written tests and exams.

More than just a Course

Hairdressing offers an exciting and challenging career in a fast paced industry. This course will further develop and refine your core employability skills such as communication and retail skills alongside specialist practical hairdressing skills and gives the opportunity for you to explore your creativity. It will give you the knowledge and practical skills to progress further within the industry or onto Higher Education. Alternatively you could progress to a higher level Apprenticeship.

Special Features

Alongside your Hairdressing lessons you will study mathematics & English which are mandatory and a core part of your study programme, if you are aged 16-18 and do not have a Grade C or Grade 4 in mathematics and English.

You will be expected to wear a uniform which costs £35.99. Equipment costs are £149.18.

Entry Qualifications

Level 2 in Hairdressing and a skills test will be required.

Commitment to regular work placement experience

Be prepared to follow strict professional standards relating to attendance, appearance and punctuality

Potential learners should have a good general education and preferably four GCSE grade D or above or level 2 in Hairdressing. Learners should also possess the following qualities:

A genuine interest in the subject

Good communication skills

Stamina

Enjoying working with people and in a team

Good dexterity skills

Personal commitment

Be reliable and punctual

You will need to provide models for some assessments and complete 6 hours per week home study

Progression

Having completed the course, you then have the option of progressing into Higher Education. You could gain employment or self-employment in a variety of locations and environments including Health Farms, Cruise Ships, as a freelance stylist, high street salon stylist or working for a product manufacturer. You can also take your level 3 qualification to work overseas.
