Your Unique Experience

» You will be assigned a Personal Tutor and a Progress Tutor who will » You will be assigned a Personal Tutor and a Progress Tutor who will specifically look after your pastoral and course requirements

» You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions, displays, case studies, presentations, written work and practical assessments whilst on placement

» You will undertake weekly work experience as a Health and Social Care Cadet. This includes the opportunity to undertake NHS placements on a variety of wards at Tameside General Hospital and specialist placements in sector specific areas e.g. mental health and sexual health. All placements are organised and arranged by our specialist Placement Officers.

» You will gain sector specific knowledge and experience from guest speakers and educational visits

» You will have the opportunity to gain the highly valued Dignity in Care Award

Course Content

Throughout the course you will develop a range of skills and knowledge preparing you for progression into employment within the Health and Social Care sector or continue to study in Higher Education.

Throughout the two-year course you will study a broad range of Health and Social Care related units such as:

» Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care

» Development through the Life Stages

» Anatomy and Physiology

» Caring for Children and Young People

» Physiological Disorders

» Safeguarding Adults and Promoting Independence

If you are interested in making a difference to people’s lives by choosing a rewarding career in Health and Social Care then this is the course for you. Health and Social Care dominates our lives. You could be looking to work with older people, young people, people with learning disabilities or within the NHS and this qualification could be the first step on that exciting journey. Health and Social Care courses provide broad based learning around the physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs of individuals of all ages preparing you for a variety of career pathways. The ‘Health Studies’ pathway prepares you specifically for careers such as paediatric nursing, adult nursing, midwifery, mental health nursing and physiotherapy. This practical and academic qualification will give you the knowledge and skills to move forward towards your goal by equipping you to progress to employment or continue to study in Higher Education. The L3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels and carries up to 420 UCAS points.

Special Features

» Alongside your core Health and Social Care studies, if you haven’t already achieved them at grade A*-C, you will study either GCSE Maths or English.

» To enable you to attend your Health and Social Care placement you will undergo and acquire an enhanced DBS check

Entry Qualifications

You are required to have 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Science (preferable) and a minimum of grade D in Maths. You will also be required to undertake an interview and will be expected to be enthusiastic about working in the health and social care sector.

You may also progress from the BTEC L2 Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care (with the required overall grade and the required English and Maths grades)


On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:

» Employment within the Health & Social Care sector
