Entry Qualifications

Minimum entry age 19.

Good communication skills are essential GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths minimum Grade D.

A minimum of 5 hours per week placement in a school of your choice in year 1 or above.

(It is your responsibility to secure a placement prior to enrolling on the course)

An Enhanced DBS form must be completed for Tameside College cost £44.


To NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.

To NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools

City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 for those applicants in paid employment as Teaching Assistants with suitable skills

Employment as a teaching assistant in school

£740 (Price Includes Registration fee of £107)
(Unemployed criteria)
If you are in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance (Work Related Activity Group), tuition fees will be waived.
If you are in receipt of Universal Credit, and are determined by Job Centre Plus as being in one of the following groups:
  • All Work Related Requirements Group
  • Work Preparation Group
  • Work Focused Interview Group

Or if you receive Income Support, Carers Allowance, Council Tax Benefit, Disability Living Allowance, Housing Benefit, Personal Independence Payments or Pension Guarantee Credit.
AND are unemployed with a weekly income of less than 16 times the minimum wage or £330 per month.
AND the course you are studying will help you find employment, your tuition fees will be waived. If you are employed, receiving work tax credit, and have an annual income less than £15,579, then your tuition fees will be waived. This also applies to all courses labelled level 1 or 2F.
