Warburtons Young Baker of the Year

Six students from Tameside College have been successful in reaching the regional final of the Warburtons Young Baker of the Year Competition.

The regional final gave the students chance to create their recipes in front of a panel of expert judges, who are looking for creativity and innovation as well as technical skill and a passion for baking.

The students had to present their recipe and loaf on the day along with other student bakers from Preston College and Deeside College. The six students who took place in the regional final are Shannon Garside, Hayley Davies, Alison Atkins, James Shaw, Rebekah Simpson and Sarah Bowden. Rebekah Simpson commented, “It was a very interesting experience which has given me more confidence to develop and adapt the skills necessary for my future career”.

Alison Atkins was delighted when she was chosen as the regional winner and received a £500 bursary to assist with her College studies. The final stage of the competition will be held on 20th November 2010, were Alison will compete against other regional winners to become Warburtons Young Baker of the Year. The winner will also receive an amazing £1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to join an apprenticeship role at Warburtons.

Bakery tutor Steve Salt commented, “It was a daunting task for students to face a panel of eight judges, all the students equipped themselves well, spoke eloquently and showed a high level of subject knowledge”.
