Students cook up funds for veterans

Students from Tameside College’s hospitality and catering department opened for business on Ashton market square in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday to raise money for the Royal British Legion (RBL)

For a small donation, members of the public and local veterans could enjoy a three course meal including butternut soup, roast chicken and spotted dick.

Kevin Taylor, editor of AboutTameside magazine and John Holden, restaurant manager at Tameside College organised the event to give students experience of working with the public and to promote the RBL cause.

John, said: “This year we wanted to do something a little different for the poppy appeal and the RBL. It was great to see people enjoy the food and donate to a great cause. The students did a really good job working in the kitchen and front of house and I’d like to say thank you to them for doing this for those who need it most.”

Lauren Mole, level one introduction to cookery student, said: “It was nice to be asked to work on the meal. I’m proud of myself for doing it and also proud of the college for organising the event. It’s a good feeling to know your work will benefit someone else.”

The RBL is one of the largest charities in the UK and raises money to help those who have been affected by service in the armed forces, whether that’s through help with living costs, physiotherapy, housing or counselling.
