New governor to give students a voice

Suraj Rash, an engineering student, has been elected as the new student governor for Tameside College and Clarendon Sixth Form College.
Suraj will sit on the board of governors, the college’s decision making body, to give students across both sites a voice on matters ranging from social space to teaching. He will also, alongside the student forum which he is a member of, be a focal point for students’ ideas, opinions and concerns at the college.
The new student governor was elected from the three candidates who were put forward for the role. Each had to produce a manifesto to share their ideas and then students voted for one of the candidates in tutorial sessions to select the student governor.
Suraj, a former Great Academy Ashton student, said: “I think it’s really important that the student governor is appointed by students, as they are the ones who will be affected by my work and decisions. I am very grateful to everyone who voted for me and I am going to try my upmost to give students a say in the future of the college.“
Leon Dowd, vice principal at Tameside College and Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “To improve the college, it’s key to understand and use the student voice effectively. Students need to be involved in decision making and feel that they are getting the most out of their course. Suraj is a fantastic asset to the college and I am looking forward to working with him to bring about positive change.”
