Students ‘rise’ to the challenge to open Bakery

Tameside College staff and students celebrate the grand opening of The Bakery at Tameside One.

The new facility is now open to the public and complements the other college services at Tameside One, including the restaurant salons.

The Bakery at Tameside College is one of only a handful of specialist training centres of its kind in the country and trains employees for companies including Roberts Bakery. The new bakery shop, which is open to the general public, is stocked with freshly made produce, baked by students (Tuesdays to Fridays from 10:00am-1:30pm).

Damian Cox, head of department for hospitality and catering at Tameside College, said: “The opening of The Bakery at Tameside One is a big step forward for the department and the college as a whole. This new facility at Tameside One will allow students to work in the best facilities, with state-of-the-art equipment and interact with customers, just like in the industry. Thank you to everyone who came along to the opening and has made this possible.”

Joel Chadwick, level 3 professional bakery student at Tameside College, said: “Having The Bakery at Tameside One in the town centre is fantastic. It allows me to gain communication and work skills whilst attending to customers and it also introduces a great facility for the community to use. I love using the new equipment in the bakery, it is a massive improvement and will help me to achieve my career goals.”
