Student shoe box appeal lifts festive spirits

Hair and beauty students at Tameside College are helping the homeless this winter with a Christmas shoe box appeal.

The entry level students delivered sixty shoe boxes full of essentials to Hebron Pentecostal Church in Rochdale, to a breakfast morning for those living on the streets.

The shoe boxes contain a range of items donated by the students including hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries, chocolates and food. Companies such as BT and Wilko have also donated items and gift cards to include in the boxes.

Alongside helping the homeless, the project was designed to give the students skills such as teamwork and employability for their future careers.

Amanda Brook, hair and beauty teacher at Tameside College, said: “It has been a great opportunity for the group to get involved in such a worthy cause. Not only does it give a deep sense of satisfaction for doing something selfless but it also develops other skills for the students. It is something we will get involved in each year from now on.”

Catherine Moon, team leader at Hebron Church Rochdale, said: “My role at the church is to support those who are poor and in need in the local area. Myself and the team are very grateful for what the students have done to contribute to our cause and it was an absolute pleasure to work with them. The shoeboxes that have been donated will be gladly received by the homeless over this especially cold winter period.”
