Cruise director gets travel students ship shape

Sophie Tehrani, a holiday cruise director, visited travel and tourism students at Tameside College to talk about her extensive career.

Sophie, who started out as an onboard stage performer, is now a cruise director working with luxury cruise line Seabourne. Cruise directors are responsible for the day-to-day running of all entertainment, hospitality and social events onboard a liner.

During the careers talk, she discussed the benefits of working on a cruise ship and travelling the world and discussed the wide range of job roles available to the students.

Sophie, said: “It is good to be here to speak to students at Tameside College. I have benefited myself from hearing from those in the industry whilst at college so, it is my opportunity to do the same for these young people. I have travelled to most places in the world and enjoyed a fantastic career. I hope that hearing from me will inspire some of them to do the same.”

Richard Goodwin, head of department for travel and tourism, said: “It was a pleasure to have Sophie visit the college to talk to students. Even though her background is in performing arts, her job role relates heavily to the travel industry and I think that hearing her speak about what that entails, inspired many of the students to think about this as a potential career path.”
