Faye retrains for dream career

Adult student, Faye, gains her dream job after retraining and passing course with flying colours.

Faye Lonergan, a former level two teaching assistant and GCSE English student, has now taken on a role at a local primary school.

Faye decided to change career paths following a career as an insurance broker, after becoming interested in teaching children with additional needs.

Alongside her studies as a teaching assistant, she also completed a GCSE English course and achieved an impressive grade 6. During her course, Faye took part in a work placement at Thomas Ashton school, which led to a full time position.

Faye, said: “I am really proud of my achievements and pleased that I now have career goals that I am working towards. I have always been interested in teaching children with additional needs but decided to switch careers and study whilst I was on maternity leave and had time to gain the qualifications I needed. I have gained a lot of knowledge and skills from taking part in the course”

“I liked the fact that I received a lot of support from my teachers on the course and even with the pandemic they were able to be flexible and provide me with the right support when it was needed.”

She now hopes to go on to study a level three teaching assistant course and progress on to university in 2022.

Kerry Clayton, teaching assistants teacher at Tameside College, said: “Faye has done an amazing job completing both her courses and moving into a career she really enjoys. It shows that retraining and gaining the skills you need isn’t impossible and I hope that she goes on to become even more successful in the future. Well done to her.”
