£1000 raised with charity restaurant evening

Students at Tameside College and a prestigious London restaurant collaborate to raise funds for charity, Hospitality Action.

Hospitality and Catering students at the college raised an impressive £1,160 for the charity, which provides financial and emotional support for those in the industry.

To raise the much needed funds, students worked with Peter Avis, general manager at Galvins at Windows and his staff to host a ‘themed evening’ at the college’s Restaurant at Tameside One. During the event members of the public were invited to sample dishes created by Galvin at Window’s chefs and prepared and served by students.

A charity auction was held during the event, with prizes including: a stay at the Hilton Park Lane London with dinner and wine flight in Galvins at Windows, a table for four at the college’s Restaurant at Tameside One, a stay at the Devonshire Arms Beeley and a stay at Leonardo Hotel Piccadilly.

Galvins at Windows sits at the top of the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in London and is reviewed as one of the best restaurants in the UK. Fred Siriex, the well known TV matre d’, also once managed the restaurant. Peter and the restaurant staff regularly work with the college to provide work experience opportunities and training for students.

The menu for the evening included: asparagus with confit St Ewe's yolk, sourdough and Wiltshire truffle, Cured Faroe Island salmon with smoked cod’s roe, beetroot and oxtails, pork cutlet with purple sprouting, apple, and smoked eel cream and a black forest dessert.

John Holden, restaurant manager and hospitality teacher at Tameside College, said: “I am extremely proud of my students and the partnership the college has developed with Galvins. Through this, we have managed to raise a fantastic amount of money for those most in need in the industry and provide guests with a fantastic restaurant experience. The students have really enjoyed organising the event and this is exactly the type of activity that will help them develop skills for their future careers. Thank you to Peter and his team at Galvin at Windows for working with us on this.”
