HNC Sport & Coaching Science

The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport & Exercise Science is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the Sport & Exercise Science sector. This qualification aims to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them. The Sport & Exercise domain is vast and dynamic, this course reflects the demands of this sector and gives you the academic and practical skills that are preferable in higher study and the work place.

Throughout year 1 you will study a range of core modules that include:

As a Higher Education student at Tameside College you will be taught by a number of lecturers with relevant industry experience in the field of sport, coaching and exercise science. Lecturers use a range of pedagogical approaches to facilitate the transfer of theoretical understanding to practical experience. You will learn new skills and apply your knowledge in a range of environments including the application of research skills in sport science labs (offsite) and physical conditioning in an advanced strength and conditioning facility (on site).

The course also allows you to engage with professionals from sporting bodies such as Sport England, local industry providers and an array of exciting guest speakers. The sport department have formed a partnership with Active Tameside to allow students to acquire valuable vocational aptitude that mirrors the local demographic and work force skills shortfall. Staff in the School of Sport, believe that gaining invaluable work experience also helps to develop a range of interpersonal skills such as communication, autonomous learning, team work, problem-solving, decision making and organisational skills. The former are vital for employment in the sport industry and are transferable to all aspects of student life. In addition, you will be given the opportunity to complete National Governing Body qualifications for a range of sports related disciplines (please note that supplementary qualifications may incur an additional charge).
Tameside College will make offers for this course based on the qualifications below and also when combined with other qualifications. You will be considered for entry with a minimum of 96 UCAS points from any of the specific grade profiles and a successful interview:

o A-levels – CC

o BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or BTEC National Diploma – MMM

o BTEC Level 3 Diploma or BTEC National Certificate – DM

o BTEC 90 Credit Diploma – D*D

o Other Level 3 equivalent qualifications will be considered via application College direct and interview.

You must have 5 GCSEs at grade A-C including Maths or English (functional skills may be considered at Level 2 for Maths and English). We encourage adult learner applications and they will be considered outside of the above academic qualifications via application and interview. Industry qualifications and experience will be beneficial.
This course is assessed buy assignment tasks that reflect the vocational and academic profile in the local sport sector. You will gain vital experience of demonstrating acquired knowledge through a range of practical and academic tasks. These may include and academic discussion, presentation, formal document, instructing and leadership tasks.
On successful completion of this qualification you may have the opportunity to progress onto: BTEC HND Sport & Exercise Science.
