Level 2 Carpentry

This qualification covers all the main skills and knowledge you will need to progress to further learning and training, or

to enter the world of work as a site carpenter. You will study the following mandatory content:

- Principles of construction

- Structural carpentry

- Non-structural carpentry prior to plastering

- Non-structural carpentry following plastering

- Timber technology and the use of a circular saw

The units are designed so that you learn the underlying principles and practical skills involved, as well as getting an

overview of the principles of construction, building technology and terminology used. Centres and providers where you do your training, work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of this training. The different ways in which centres could support your learning, by working with local and national businesses include:

- Structured work-experience or work placements.
Our Joinery department has strong links with industry leaders such as Festool, Hitachi which support our learners with the use of industry tooling and materials.

Your timetable will consist of 3 hours per week classroom based learning for your underpinning knowledge and 9 hours per week workshop with a 1-hour tutorial over 3 days per week.

Our study programmes include a vocational qualification, English and maths, work experience and employability skills. Students also have the opportunity to take part in sport and enrichment activities alongside their course.

You can easily transfer from a study programme onto a Joinery apprenticeship course. There will be dedicated individual/self-study time which needs to be supported by your own study out of the College learning environments. E-learning is also a key element of all our courses and will involve you using Microsoft Teams for independent study and learning

There are opportunities to demonstrate your skills and abilities through skill competitions. You will need your own personal protective equipment including safety boots and work clothing (you can purchase these from our approved suppliers at a discounted rate). Although all other tools and equipment are provided, you will need to purchase stationery items for use in the classroom such as folders, pens and rulers.
Level 1 C&J Qualification 4 GCSEs grade 3 - 1 including English and Maths.

Assessments are completed at the end of the course.

Graded - pass, merit, distinction and distinction*

Part A – Theory examination

Part B – Synoptic assignment (external practical examination)

Important to note: you will only be given one opportunity to re-sit the external exam and the final synoptic assessment.

City & Guilds Technical Level Qualifications is assessed in a variety of methods.

Externally set and marked theory exam that will consist of short answer questions, multiple choice and detailed answer questions.

Practical skills will be assessed in a number of ways. During the course your practical skills will be assessed regular by progressing set mile-stones, ensuring competency and preparing you for the final synoptic assessment.

All of the grades for the externally set exam and synoptic assessment will then be calculated so you will complete the overall year with a fail, pass, merit, distinction or distinction star grade.

On successful completion of the course, you be graded a pass, merit or distinction.
