International travel and tourism is an ever expanding industry. In December 2014, it was identified that over 3 million people were employed in travel and tourism industries in England. From tour operators to travel agencies, airlines to airports, visitor attractions to blogging, the industry is evolving.

The employment market is vast and the job roles within the industry are progressing. Along with the traditional travel agencies, young people are identifying the modern travel industry as an excellent career path.

Local online travel agency On The Beach to some of Manchester’s finest hotels, students are seeing that travel and tourism is more than ‘cabin crew’.

Manchester is a hub for international travel and tourism along with the longstanding neighbouring cultural city of Liverpool. The many employers in the North West seek young, fresh, motivated, well qualified individuals; Tameside College being perfectly situated to provide such talent.

A Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND) is an excellent qualification that will develop your skills and knowledge for a successful career in International Travel and Tourism.

By the end of the full two year programme, you may be able to progress onto a BA (hons) top up course at an external university.

The Travel Department has great industry links providing many excellent learning opportunities for guest speakers, trips out of college into industry along with some excellent learning resources.

The HNC programme consists of the following units:

Unit 1 (Mandatory): The Contemporary Travel and Tourism Industry

Unit 2 (Mandatory): Managing the Customer Experience

Unit 3 (Mandatory): Professional Identity and Practice

Unit 4 (Mandatory): The Travel and Tourism Business Toolkit

Unit 5 (Mandatory): Leadership and Management for Service Industries

Unit 8 (Optional): Visitor Attraction Management

Unit 11 (Optional): Corporate Travel Management

Unit 14 (Optional): Work Experience

As part of the learning experience, we will have a fantastic opportunity for a number of students who carry out fully funded work placements in Australia. This opportunity is only offered via application and interview during the course year.
We would expect students to have GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths or English. Ideally you will have completed the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism or the Level 3 Diploma in Aviation Operations.

Individuals that don’t necessarily have any of the qualifications above, may contact us to discuss their application, in this instance a short entry assessment may be expected to be completed.
This is a full time course, which we approach in a very practical way. You will be expected to undertake group work to create and deliver presentations; you will be expected to write assignments and take part in group discussions.
On successful completion of the HNC, you will be able to progress onto the HND.

On completing the full HND programme, you may wish to continue your studies at an external university to complete a BA Top Up course.
