Level 1 Award in Introductory Metal Inert Gas Term 3

This level 1 course in Metal Arc Gas Shielded welding (MIG) has been specifically designed for those who are at beginner level and are interested in pursuing a career or developing existing skills in the welding and engineering sector.

You will learn the skills required to complete the following assessments:

Practical assessment 1 - Produce beads on plate in a PA flat position

Practical assessment 2 - Produce a lap fillet weld in a PB horizontal/vertical position

Practical assessment 3 - Produce a tee fillet weld in the PA flat position

Practical assessment 4 - Produce a tee fillet weld in the PB horizontal/vertical position

Practical assessment 5 - Produce a corner weld in the PA flat position

Knowledge assessment 6 – Understand and explain the process and health and safety requirements for MIG welding

Assessment is by visual examination only of 5 test pieces and underpinning knowledge will be assessed through oral questioning.
The course is in our fully equipped welding workshop which consists of 12 welding bays incorporating MMA, MIG, TIG.

The skills gained will be at industry standard and this could be your first step along your career path.

One to one interview with course tutor to discuss your current skills level and make sure the programme is right for you to achieve your goals.
●  Throughout the course you will produce work that will be assessed against the City & Guilds standards. The final assessment will test your unit-based knowledge and practical work. We will support you throughout the course with regular assessment tasks and feedback in preparation for the formal assessments.
On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto: either a different welding process such as MMA or TIG.

Alternatively, you may decide to complete the level 2 Qualification in the same discipline to further develop your skills.

If you are a Greater Manchester resident, and meet the unemployed criteria, or are employed where the low wage flexibility applies, (or are aged 19-23 and non GM resident) and don’t already hold a qualification equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, and you need to study at Entry or Level 1 to progress to Level 2, tuition fees will be waived.
