Student attends top Swiss Bakery School

Level 3 Bakery student, Chloe Daniel recently had the pleasure of attending Switzerland’s leading Centre of Excellence for bakery and confectionery craft School Richemont to develop new skills and techniques in baking.

The Swiss are famous for their confectionery and baking using precise and unique techniques to make their world famous delicacies, the perfect place for one lucky Tameside College student to hone their baking skills!

Food Studies Curriculum Leader, Lorna Jones explained: “Every year the Worshipful Company of Bakers holds a competition for Bakery students to find the most promising and hard-working student to spend two days studying and practising different baking disciplines within Europe. We put forward our top three students every year to compete for a place with a reference from the College outlining their credentials in baking.”

The winner would also have an opportunity to get a ‘flavour’ for Swiss culture with trips to bakeries and other food establishments in Lucerne to see the variety and creative possibilities in baking.

Chloe said: “The whole experience was incredible for me. Achieving this award has enabled me to grow in confidence as a person and a baker. I learned so much in just two days at the school and the skills and techniques I acquired during my visit I’ll be able to put into practise in my future career. I want to thank all the tutors at the Richemont School for the amazing opportunity to share their knowledge with us and the Tutors at Tameside College who have supported us throughout.”

Lorna added: “It’s so important to give students experiences out of their comfort zone and in completely new environments to learn new skills and give them an understanding of how other cultures prepare food differently. It gives them a sense of achievement that gives them the confidence to go onto university or employment.”
