Tameside College celebrates Active Colleges funding grant

Tameside College has been awarded a grant for £48,516 for the development of sports provision.

Active Colleges, run by Sport England, is a £25 million National Lottery funded project which aims to help more college students play sport, especially female students and students with disabilities.

As part of the grant Tameside College has appointed Chris Banks as Sports Development Officer, Chris, a former professional basketball player, will help increase participation in sport and fitness activities at the College.

Chris said: “This role is a huge opportunity for me to help students get involved in sports and fitness by focusing on what activities they like and tailoring our activities that students want. It doesn’t matter where you’re from as sport brings everyone together and allows people to excel in things they didn’t think they could. We hope to achieve this with the Sports England funding.”

Activities currently available at the college include: female-only street fit, zumba, volleyball, basketball and disability focused activities such as disability football and goalball.

Former Copley Academy student Josh Swift who is now studying hospitality at Tameside College said: “As a wheelchair user I never used to get involved with sport because I didn’t think I could. Since Tameside College has introduced disability football I’ve been able to get involved with sport and now I love it. I attend every week and have got all my friends involved too which makes it more fun as we all hang out together every week.”
