Students add finishing touches to new build

Construction students from Tameside College had the exciting opportunity to work on the new Advanced Technologies Centre based at the Beaufort Road site with construction firm, Kier.
Students from an array of construction trades including: joinery and carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating, bricklaying and electrical joined the Kier workforce to assist in the final stage of the building’s construction.
Phil Jones, Construction Project Manager at Kier, said: “Construction is a big industry that is always seeking fresh talent like these students from Tameside College. We have never conducted work experience on this scale before so we’re really pleased with the positive response from the workers onsite. They have really enjoyed being mentors to the students and helping them gain hands-on experience on a real-life construction site. These students are going to be our employees of the future so this sort of work experience is so important for their future career prospects.”
A celebration was held at the new Advanced Technologies Centre to commemorate the success of the work experience project. Level 2 carpentry student, Brandon Williams was chosen as the best work experience learner for his hard-working attitude and talent he showcased in his woodwork. With some encouraging words from the Project Manager, Brandon accepted his prize; choosing his own box of specialist tools to further hone his craft.
Brandon, a former Glossopdale Community College student said: “It has been an amazing experience working with Kier on Tameside College’s new build. I didn’t know what to expect when I first came onsite but the workers made us all feel welcome. I really enjoyed my time on the work placement as it has boosted my confidence and now I feel that I’m more determined than ever to pursue a career in carpentry.”
Gail Clifford, Work Experience Manager at Tameside College who set up the student work experience with Kier, said: “The students have done exceptionally well, conducting themselves professionally throughout their work experience, whether it was for a day or two weeks and we’re really proud of them. Work experience plays a key role when student’s finish college as it sets them apart in the working world and makes them more well- rounded candidates in the application process.”
