Level 3 Computing

Few industries are as dynamic, fast-moving and changeable as Computing and IT. As we approach the 4th Industrial Revolution, preparation is all – and where better to prepare for this exciting future than in our state of the art Computing suites at Tameside College; THE Centre of Excellence in Computing and IT.

Throughout this full time, 2-year study programme, you will establish a comprehensive digital strategy to equip you with the right skills for Industry 4.0 and future-proof your employment opportunities for an as yet undreamt-of workforce in the Global future.

You will engage in a variety of innovative Information Technology and Computing topics which ideal for students who wish to further their studies at higher levels or begin a career in a growth industry which involves jobs such as social media managers, coders and developers plus network engineers.

This is a unique opportunity to gain current experience of the coding sector through the colleges collaboration with Manchester Digital. Work experience, industry related activities, master classes and career development sessions are embedded within the course.

The course covers a wide range of units that broadly fall into these areas:

Software Development

Web Development

Cyber Security

Game Development

Data Science

Hardware

We also work closely with employers such as Autotrader and Vodaphone as well as working with Manchester Digital to set up placements, guest speakers and event days.

Use industry standard development tools such as: The Unreal Development Engine, Visual Studio, Adobe Creative Suite, Unity Game Engine, Office 365.

You will have access to our bespoke E-Sports studio which contains the latest games consoles, and facilities.

Access to our two new ‘Game Development Suites’ of high specification computers which are loaded with the latest Game Development software and 3D Modelling and animation tools such as Unity, Unreal, Blender and Maya. The high spec suites comprise desktop computers with Intel I7 Processors, NVidia 2070 dedicated graphics cards (capable of ray tracing technology), SSD Hard Drives and 32GB DDR4 Ram.

An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will be designed with you, to meet your needs and targets will be set to enable your progress and achievement to be tracked and monitored.

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor and a Progress Tutor who specifically look after your pastoral and progress requirements throughout the course.

Team events such as Tameside and inter-college / school ‘Hacks’ give you further opportunity to work with industry professionals.

You will also be exposed to a variety of industry experts via trips, placements and guest speakers. For example with companies such as Auto Trader, Vodaphone, Rental Cars, Booking Go, Play Expo and Manchester Digital.

Opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with your peers mirroring current industry practice such as Agile development.
5 GCSE grades at 4 or above. You will be interviewed for this course and should be enthusiastic about working in the computing sector and able to participate in work experience.

If you have not achieved a Grade 4 in your GCSE maths and/or GCSE English Language, you must continue working towards achieving these GCSE qualifications.

If you have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in maths and/or English, you are no longer required to continue to study and work towards achieving your GCSE Grade 4 in maths and/or English.
There are four externally assessed units:

1 Principles of Computer Science (Examination)

2 Fundamentals of Computer Systems (Examination)

3 Planning and Management of Computing Projects (Exam board set assessments)

4 Software Design and Development Project (Exam board set assessments)

All other units are ‘paperless’ with assignment submission, marking and feedback all provided through our VLE (virtual learning environment), and Microsoft Teams. We use a wide range of assessment methods such as discussions, presentations, written work, video and audio evidence.

There is mandatory work experience embedded into this programme that will be integral to developing the employability skills of each learner.
On completion of the first year you will progress onto year 2 which is equivalent to 3 A levels.

From year two, you can progress onto:

University at undergraduate level.

Our in-house HNC/HND in computing.

Employment within the IT/Computing sector such as web development, competitive gaming, e-sports promoter, e-sports/social media influencer and digital marketer

Degree level Apprenticeship

Self-employment as an e-sports digital marketer and promoter or professional e-sports gamer

We actively support learners on their pathway to higher level study. We work closely with our learners through the UCAS process or assisting with applications for apprenticeships or career pathways.?
