Wessex Salon Culinaire Competitions

Catering Students walked away with a mass of medals at the ‘Wessex Salon Culinaire Competitions’ which incorporated the World Skills entry heats in Bournemouth. The five students were supported by Catering Tutors Paul Yau and John Holden and ALS tutor Amy Spencer.

Edward Kirby, Jodie Brown, Sam Brown, Rebecca Churchill and Natalie Taylor entered a number of classes ranging from Fish course (Static Display), Hot mushroom starter live heat, and a cold mayonnaise live heat, along with Chicken preparation live heat.  Also there was cocktails and Coffee making, Napkin Folding and Table Layup. All these classes had up to 90 competitors spread over 9 heats for each class and were done in front of a live audience.

The group came home with the following accolade:

Sam Brown NVQ Level 1- Overall Bronze Medallion for World Skills, Bronze Medal - Cocktails and Coffees, Bronze Medal - Napkin Folding & Bronze Medal - Table Layup.

Jodie Brown NVQ Level 1- Bronze Medal - Cocktails and Coffees, Bronze Medal - Table layup & Certificate of Merit - Napkin Folding.

Edward Kirby NVQ Level 1- Silver Medal - Table Layup, Bronze Medal- Cocktails and Coffee & Certificate of Merit - Napkin Folding
                           
Natalie Taylor NVQ  Level 3- Silver Medal - Sauté Chicken Preparation, Finalist in Mushroom Starter & Finalist in Fish Static Display

Rebecca Churchill NVQ Level 2- Finalist in the Mayonnaise class

The students had a hard but rewarding day and they all thoroughly enjoyed the event. Catering tutor, John Holden commented, “The students did a fantastic job both on the day and before, through weeks of practising, we are very proud of their achievements and they all thoroughly deserve their medals. Well done to them all for working so hard and taking part.”
